Red Dwarf- Back to Earth, why so many references to Blade Runner?
I don't get it. Last night the old man in the freezer thingy and tonight the building with the oriental woman on the screen!
What's that all about?
Simple, the group hallucination was based on Blade Runner. This is even mentioned in the third episode! And in the making of we learn that it was done as a homage to Blade Runner.
It's human psychology written into a sitcom - when we hallucinate for lengthy periods of time, and with this sort of significance, our hallucinations are greatly influenced by things we've experienced or seen.
It's a typical sort of thing that happens in television and film - all plots are eventually similar to others.
It's not really Doug's fault. Bare in mind that he had only 6 months to come up with an idea and write a script and then film and edit that script. That's not long at all. He was under a lot of pressure - can you imagine how hard it is to just be told to do something like this? It wasn't Doug's idea to bring Red Dwarf back, so he hadn't had time to prepare for what he did.
If Doug had, had the full amount of time needed (a year or two would have been good), then he would undoubtedly have come up with something better.
It's not that bad, TV programmes do this all the time - especially when they lack in time.
